Concrete Services in Edmonton

Edmonton is one of the larger suburbs in the Cairns region, stretching either side of the Bruce Highway about 13 kilometres south of the CBD. It grew out of the old Hambledon sugar district, and the former mill site is now the Sugarworld recreation area, with the Cairns International Raceway also in the suburb. Housing ranges from older lowset brick and timber homes near the highway to newer estates towards the range and Mount Peter. Cairns Concrete Driveways replaces tired driveways, builds new ones and adds outdoor areas right across the suburb. For an older home, concrete driveway resurfacing can sometimes give a worn but sound surface a second life, while a newer home might need its first concrete driveway, along with paths, a clothesline pad and somewhere to park the trailer.

Edmonton is mostly flat to gently sloping, with creeks draining off the range towards Trinity Inlet, so water management is an everyday consideration. In heavy wet-season storms, driveways that fall the wrong way or have sunk over time can send water towards garages and doors. We set falls carefully, use broomed or exposed finishes for grip and recommend sealing to help resist staining and moisture. Families often want more outdoor space too, so a concrete patio under a new roof or around the barbecue area is a popular addition. If you are widening a driveway or adding a second crossover, it is worth confirming the requirements with Cairns Regional Council before we start.

Why choose us

Why Locals in Edmonton Trust Our Crew

Experienced With Established Homes

Older properties come with existing driveways to remove, tree roots, underground services and established gardens. We plan demolition and new work carefully, locate services before digging and protect the parts of the yard you want to keep, from lawns to fences.

Good Advice on Repair or Replace

Not every tired driveway needs to come out. We look at the condition of the slab and the base, and tell you honestly whether repair, resurfacing or replacement is the better use of your money over the long term.

Drainage Done Properly

Flat ground and heavy tropical rain make falls critical. We check how water currently flows on your block and design the new concrete to move it away from the house, garage and neighbouring properties, rather than letting it pond in the wrong places.

Local to the Southern Suburbs

We schedule jobs across Edmonton, Bentley Park, White Rock and Mount Peter together, which helps us book crews, concrete and pumps efficiently and keep to the timeline we give you at the start. If the weather intervenes, you hear from us early.

Finishes for Busy Families

Kids, bikes, cars and pets are tough on a driveway. We recommend finishes that grip in the wet, hide everyday marks and are easy to hose clean, and we explain how each option will look and wear over time.

Neat and Considerate

We keep noise and disruption to a minimum, contain concrete washout, protect neighbouring driveways and footpaths and clean up thoroughly when the job is done, so your street is left the way we found it, minus the old driveway.

Edmonton Concrete FAQs

Here are the questions Edmonton homeowners ask us most often about driveways, patios and repairs.

It depends on what is happening underneath. Resurfacing works best when the existing slab is structurally sound, with only surface wear, staining or minor cracking. If the driveway has large cracks that move, sections that have sunk or lifted, or a base that has washed out, a resurfacing layer will usually crack again over the same problems. In those cases, removal and replacement is the more reliable option. We inspect the driveway, check for movement and drainage issues and explain the likely lifespan of each option, so you can weigh the cost against how long you plan to stay in the home.

For a typical suburban driveway, the work itself often takes a few days: removing the old concrete, preparing the base, setting formwork and reinforcement, then pouring and finishing. After that, the concrete needs time to cure before it takes vehicles. Foot traffic is usually fine within a day or two, but we generally suggest waiting longer before driving on it, and we will give you specific advice for your job. Weather can change the timing, as heavy rain can delay excavation and pouring. We give you a realistic schedule up front and keep you updated if anything changes along the way.

Widening within your property is usually straightforward, but anything that changes the section between your boundary and the road, such as a wider or additional crossover, may need council approval and must meet council standards. Requirements can cover location, width and distance from drainage pits, street trees and other features. We suggest checking with Cairns Regional Council before committing to a design. Once you know what is allowed, we can widen the driveway, add a parking bay or build a pad for a caravan, matching the existing levels so the new section blends in neatly with the old.

Tree roots are a common cause of cracking and lifting, especially with large, fast-growing species close to a driveway. As roots grow, they can push slabs up, and in drier periods they can draw moisture from the soil beneath, causing settlement. Water getting under the slab through existing cracks can make things worse. The fix depends on the tree, the damage and whether you want to keep the tree. Options include removing and replacing affected sections, installing a root barrier or adjusting the layout. If the tree is significant or on council land, check with Cairns Regional Council before doing anything to it.

Lighter colours generally stay cooler than dark ones, because they reflect more sunlight. A plain light grey or a light-toned exposed aggregate is usually more comfortable on bare feet than charcoal or other dark coloured concrete. Shading the area with a roof, shade sail or trees makes the biggest difference of all. Texture matters too, as a smooth polished or honed finish can get slippery when wet from rain or the pool. We can show you samples and talk through how each finish behaves in the heat, so you can choose a patio that looks good and is comfortable to use.
