Need quality digging in Cairns for your next project? We carry out precise digging for footings, pits, post holes, drainage, garden features and general site preparation. Careful digging makes sure your concrete, walls and structures start with the right depth, width and shape. We work with care around existing fences, trees and structures, keeping disturbance to your property as low as possible. Accurate digging also saves time and money later.
Our crews use compact machinery and hand tools to suit each site, including tight backyards and awkward access areas. We consider soil type, drainage and nearby services so the job goes smoothly, then clear away spoil to leave the site tidy. Whether it is a small hole or a large dig, we do the job properly every time. Contact us today to discuss your digging requirements and get a quote.
Digging Services in Cairns
Shade Sail and Pergola Footings
Shade sails pull hard on their posts when a storm comes through, so the footing holes need to be generous. We dig to the sizes on your engineer's or supplier's drawings for sails, pergolas and carports, ready for concrete and post brackets.
Stormwater Trenches and Pits
Trenches for downpipe lines, grated drains and rubble pits, dug with a steady fall so water actually moves during a tropical downpour. On flat blocks near the coast that grade is easy to get wrong, so we check levels as we go rather than guessing by eye.
Planting Holes and New Beds
Big holes for palms and advanced trees, new garden beds and turf preparation, saving you hours of hard work in the heat. We can loosen compacted clay at the base so roots spread outwards instead of circling in a hole that holds water.
Stump and Root Removal
Old tree stumps and thick root masses dug out so the ground can be used for paving, lawn or a new slab. Left in place they often cause settling later as the timber rots, so we take out as much as practical and backfill the hole.
Trenching for Services
Narrow trenches for water lines, irrigation, conduit to a shed and similar runs, opened to the depth your plumber or electrician needs. We keep trenches neat and straight so the trades can lay their pipes and cables quickly, then backfill once they have finished.
Path and Pad Box-Outs
Shallow digs for new paths, tank pads, small slabs and paver areas, taken down to an even depth to suit the base and concrete going in. Getting the box-out right saves on material and avoids thin spots in the concrete that tend to crack later.

Whether it is a single post hole or a full yard of footings, a small digging job still deserves careful planning. Here are three simple ways to get our Cairns crew lined up for your dig.
- Ring the crew: Give us a call and run through what you need dug, the rough size and depth, and the suburb so we can bring the right-sized machine.
- Text a quick video: A short clip of the yard, side gate and any slopes shows us whether a mini excavator or a larger machine will fit.
- Mark it out first: Spray paint or peg the area you want dug, then send us a snap so we can price the job accurately.

What Sets Our Digging Team Apart in Cairns
Holes Set Out To Plan
Fence lines, pergola posts and pier grids need every hole in exactly the right spot. We run string lines and measure off the plans or your pegs before the auger touches the ground, so posts and piers line up first time.
Solid Bottoms In Every Footing
Concrete poured onto loose crumbs has nothing firm beneath it. We clean every hole back to undisturbed ground, a quick extra step that noticeably improves how a footing holds up over the years.
Lawns And Gardens Looked After
Machines and wheelbarrows can chew up a yard quickly. We lay ground protection mats where they are needed, keep to one track in and out, and tidy up so your turf, paving and garden edges are left in good shape.
Open Holes Protected From Rain
A footing hole left open through a tropical storm fills with water and caves in at the sides. We aim to dig close to pour day, and cover or barricade open holes so they stay safe for children and pets.
Handed Over Ready For Trades
Holes and trenches are finished to the depth and width your plumber, electrician, fencer or concreter asked for, with spoil stacked well back from the edges, so they can start work as soon as they arrive.
Small Jobs Taken Seriously
A handful of post holes still deserves to be done properly. We are glad to quote short, simple digs and give them the same care with set-out, depth and clean-up as a much bigger job.

Digging FAQs
Quick answers for Cairns property owners planning a dig: how it compares with excavation, fence post depths, striking rock, buried services and getting rid of spoil.
Think of it as a question of scale. Excavation is the bulk work, such as cutting a building platform, shaping a sloping block for a driveway or moving a lot of earth around a property. Digging is smaller and more precise: individual holes for posts and piers, footing trenches, a pad for a rainwater tank, pulling out a stump or preparing a spot for a palm. The two often use different machines and crews and are priced differently, which is why we treat them as separate services. Not sure where your job fits? Explain the end goal and we will recommend a method and price it clearly.
Roughly a third of the visible post length below ground is the usual rule, which puts holes for a 1.8 metre fence at about 600 mm. Gate posts and anything that carries weight or swings need deeper, wider holes. The soil changes things as well. Sandy or filled ground needs extra depth before it firms up, seasonal clay movement between the wet and the dry can lever posts out of line over time, and on a slope the downhill side needs more. In our cyclone region, shade sail and carport posts should follow the footing sizes from an engineer or supplier, and where drawings specify a size, that is what we dig.
Sometimes, and location is the biggest clue. Most of the coastal plain and the Barron delta is deep alluvial soil where rock is rare. Hillside suburbs like Edge Hill, Whitfield, Brinsmead and Bayview Heights are a different story, with granite that can sit not far under the topsoil, and its exact position is rarely obvious from the surface. Weathered or fractured rock usually comes out with a heavier bucket or a ripper tooth. Solid rock can need a hydraulic breaker or a core drill, which takes longer and costs more. Moving a hole a little can sometimes dodge a boulder. We will give you our view on rock when we visit and explain how any extra work would be charged.
It can, and the risk is highest on small jobs, since a couple of post holes rarely seem worth checking. For every dig we lodge a request through the Before You Dig Australia service (BYDA), look for clues on the surface such as pits and valve covers, and uncover any known or likely line by hand before the machine goes near it. Utility plans only cover public networks, so private runs such as irrigation, a power feed to the shed or a stormwater pipe added by a previous owner will not be shown. Anything you remember about where these run is worth passing on, because it often beats any drawing.
We can, and it is worth settling this before the job starts. Good soil can often stay on your block, spread over a low patch of lawn or used to raise a garden bed, which adds nothing to the price. If there is nowhere for it, we load it and take it away. Removal always has a cost, even for a small pile, as it involves a truck, travel time and tip charges, and a steep driveway or narrow side path can mean wheeling it out by barrow first. Heavy clay makes poor fill under paving, so we will flag it if yours is better hauled away. We are happy to quote both ways.
