Asphalt Driveways in Cairns

Considering an asphalt driveway in Cairns? Asphalt offers a smooth, dark, quick to install surface that suits many homes and properties, particularly longer rural driveways and sloping access roads. It is flexible, handles vehicle loads well and can be a cost-effective alternative to concrete. We prepare the base properly so the surface remains stable and resists potholes and ruts through the wet season and many years of heavy daily use.

Our process includes excavation, compaction, base preparation and careful laying and rolling of the asphalt for an even finish with proper falls for drainage. In tropical heat, correct installation matters, and we plan the work to achieve a clean, durable result. If you are weighing up asphalt against concrete, we are happy to explain the differences and help you choose. Call us today for friendly, honest advice and a quote.

What we offer

Residential and Commercial Asphalt Driveway Services in Cairns

Hot-Mix Driveway Installation

We excavate, lay a crushed rock base and roll hot-mix asphalt into a firm, even driveway for your home. It suits suburban blocks, new builds and knock-down rebuilds, and we shape the edges to sit neatly against lawns, garden beds and your front path.

Acreage and Farm Accessways

Longer runs of asphalt for acreage blocks around Gordonvale, Kuranda and the northern beaches hinterland. We build the pavement up so it sits slightly above the surrounding ground, which keeps delivery trucks, horse floats and the family car on firm footing after heavy rain.

Pothole and Patch Repairs

Potholes, broken edges and sunken patches cut out square, the base topped up and recompacted, then filled with fresh hot-mix and rolled flush. Targeted repairs like this suit a driveway that is mostly sound and simply needs its worst spots fixed before the next run of wet-season storms makes them worse.

Unit and Strata Driveways

Shared driveways for townhouse complexes, duplexes and strata blocks, laid in sections where needed so residents keep access to their garages. We work with body corporate managers on timing and notices, and set levels carefully at each garage door and pathway so nothing traps water.

Commercial Yards and Hardstands

Asphalt hardstands for depots, trade yards, sheds and small car parks, built with a thicker base where trucks turn and park. We can leave the surface ready for line marking and wheel stops, and lay it out so forklifts, utes and customer vehicles each have a sensible route through the site.

Firm Edges and Street Joins

The edges are where asphalt usually fails first, so we finish them with concrete kerb, flush edging or a compacted shoulder. Where the driveway meets the street, we tie into the existing crossover or kerb neatly so there is no lip to catch tyres or let water in.

Hire Asphalt Driveway Contractors in Cairns: Three Easy First Steps

Thinking about sealing a gravel drive or replacing tired bitumen? Asphalt goes down fast and handles daily traffic well. Here are three easy ways to start a conversation with our Cairns crew about your driveway.

  • Measure it roughly: Pace out the length and width of the driveway, then phone us with those figures and the current surface so we can sketch a budget.
  • Show us the drainage: Snap photos after a heavy downpour so we can see where water pools and plan falls that send it away from the house.
  • Tell us your deadline: Let us know when the car needs to be back on the driveway, and we will plan laying and rolling around that date.

Every enquiry is handled by the people who will actually lay your asphalt, not a call centre. We know how Cairns foothill blocks shed water in a tropical storm and we build the base to cope. Ring (07) 4043 7499 or fill in the form to book your free quote.

Why choose us

What Sets Our Asphalt Driveway Team Apart in Cairns

Driveable The Next Day

For a rental between tenants or a business that can't lose its yard for long, asphalt is the practical pick. Cars can usually use it the day after laying, whereas a concrete slab generally needs around a week before it takes vehicles.

Base Depth Set By Your Ground

Soft alluvial soil on the Barron delta calls for a different approach from a rocky foothill block. We excavate to suit what we find, compact the crushed rock in layers and test that it is firm before any asphalt is spread.

Tight Timing On Laying Day

Hot-mix only compacts properly within a narrow temperature window, and a sudden shower or a damp base closes that window quickly. The trucks, paver and roller are booked to arrive in sequence, so every section is rolled while it is still workable.

Storm Water Kept Off The Edges

On a sloping drive, a tropical downpour gathers speed and starts eating away at the asphalt edges. We shape a gentle crossfall and add spoon drains or grated cut-offs, so runoff is let off the drive in stages instead of racing to the street.

Neighbouring Surfaces Protected

Tack coat and hot-mix stick to whatever they touch. We mask off kerbs, paths, garage door tracks and garden edges before work begins, then leave the site swept and clear, so the only change you notice is the new driveway.

Line-By-Line Pricing

Our quotes break out excavation, base material, asphalt, edging and sealing as separate items. Each part is costed in plain view, so you can trim the scope if needed and weigh our price against others on equal terms.

Asphalt Driveway FAQs

Answers to the questions Cairns homeowners ask us most about asphalt: parking on it, choosing it over concrete, laying in the wet season and resurfacing an old drive.

In most cases, the following day. Asphalt firms up as it cools instead of curing chemically like concrete, so a family car can usually use it after about a day. The surface keeps hardening for several weeks, though, and during that time it can mark. Try not to turn the steering wheel while the car is stationary, avoid leaving a loaded trailer or caravan in one spot, and slip a board under motorbike stands, jacks or ladders. On hot, sticky Cairns afternoons the asphalt stays softer than it does on a cool morning, so take extra care in the first month, especially near the garage where cars turn.

That comes down to budget, timing and the traffic you expect. Asphalt normally costs less per square metre, quicker to lay and ready for cars within a day, and because it flexes a little it copes with slight seasonal movement in reactive clay soils. Concrete costs more but tends to last a good deal longer, resists tyre scuffing and heavy vehicles parked in one place, and can be coloured, stamped or exposed. On a steep block, either surface needs enough texture to stay grippy in heavy rain. If you are a landlord, or run a business that can't be closed for a week, asphalt often makes the most sense.

It is harder, and rain affects asphalt more than many people expect. The mix must be spread and rolled while it is still hot, and wet weather pulls heat out of it quickly, which makes good compaction difficult and leaves a weaker, shorter-lived surface. A sodden base is just as much of a problem. Where possible we book asphalt work in the dry season, roughly May to October, and in the wet months we pick days with a clear forecast. If your job can't wait, we will explain the risks plainly and plan the day around the radar.

Quite often, and it usually costs much less. If the base is still firm and the trouble is limited to surface wear, fine cracking or faded, brittle asphalt, a fresh layer laid over the top can add years of use. If the base has failed, an overlay only covers the problem for a while, and the same cracks tend to reappear before long. Signs of base failure include soft patches that move underfoot, repeated potholes and water that sits in dips after rain. We inspect the base first and will be upfront if an overlay isn't good value for your drive.

A well-built asphalt driveway with good drainage can give many years of service, and regular sealing extends that further. In the tropics the biggest threats are UV, which slowly dries out and hardens the bitumen binder, and water that seeps into small cracks. During a long wet season, that water can soften the base beneath and widen the cracks, so minor damage grows quickly if it is ignored. Resealing every few years, filling cracks while they are small and keeping leaf litter and silt off the surface all help. We can suggest a simple maintenance schedule when we hand the driveway over.
